DAYTONA BEACH — The expectations for Bethune-Cookman senior linebacker Taurean Charles have been high since he arrived on the national scene as the focal point of the 2003 documentary film Year of the Bull.

Three years later, nobody in B-CC’s program has higher expectations than Charles, whose off-field troubles after his high school career at Miami Northwestern led Florida to eventually revoke his scholarship.

The Wildcats begin their season tonight in Jacksonville against Southern University in the Gateway Classic.

“We have a very strong team both offensively and defensively,” said Charles, who believes the Wildcats are capable of winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title.

For that to occur, Charles must fulfill the potential that has him ranked among the best defensive players in Division I-AA after a 2005 season in which he had 94 tackles and 31/2 sacks.
